When I think about it, the most important motivation for me is to please God. But pleasing God is not something odd or outlandish.
I reckon God is actually just as interested in pleasing me – in pleasing us! He is in love with us after all. I was so pleased this morning with the quality of the dawn. As I was cycling along a seafront, the sky was a tangerine colour, and the sun was just slipping up like a soft-focus orange, more like a sunset than a beginning, really. There were scrapes and fluffs of cloud snaking across the sky, and the sea was mellow, subservient, pooling over the sand.
There was a chill in the air this morning as well. That’s what just brings home the beauty of the world – the glory of the creation. It wakes you up enough to notice it. Not cold enough to cause a cut in your throat and mucus in your lungs if you’re exercising – but nippy enough to be grateful. For everything.
I want to please this God. He has set out on such a large scale to please me.
