Write out your whole sermon?

This has some stimulating thoughts, especially all the responses to it – at the moment I write out a full sermon, and then if I have time I try to thin it down to bullet points.  Over-preparation has the danger of squeezing the Holy Spirit out, and I think it depends on whether your ministry as a preacher is heavily prophetic, or whether it is more teaching-oriented.  I am conscious that I am certainly not the latter; but I wouldn’t say I was the former either!

There are ten reasons given here why it is a good thing to write out the text of your sermon, and I think that individuals should follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in terms of what He is prompting them – however, when you are preaching fairly regularly, it is important to get it right for the sake of the saints who have to listen to you!  One statistic that surprised me was that it takes around 200 sermons to find your own voice and be comfortable with it; I have some way to go in that case…

About stayingfaithful

I am looking for anything that relates to life and to a fuller life. I am bored by the normal and the natural and interested in the supernatural. There must be more than this. We were put on this earth for more than a nine to five prison, as someone said a few years ago.
